Charles the red squirrel kitten - who was raised by members of the Penrith and District Red Squirrel Group after being found unable to fend for himself - has been released into the wild. Sarah McNeil, one of the conservation workers who has been caring for him, reports that he is in excellent health, and has acclimatised well to his new environment.

Red squirrels are making a comeback to parts of Northumberland. The Red Squirrel Survival Trust has confirmed that there are encouraging signs of reds returning to some areas of the county where they had been thought to have vanished for 10 years.

Paradise Park in Hayle, Cornwall is to be involved in the Cornwall Red Squirrel Project which aims to re-introduce red squirrels to the Lizard and West Penwith areas of the county. The wildlife park currently has a breeding group of three adults with nine youngsters, and has been involved in the reintroduction of the species to Anglesey in north Wales.

A Budgens supermarket in Crouch End, north London has started selling grey squirrel meat. Store owner Andrew Thornton has praised the meat as having a lovely taste rather like rabbit, and being far more sustainable than industrially-farmed meat.

Newcastle-based bakers Greggs are producing a special red squirrel gingerbread biscuit to raise funds for the Northumberland Wildlife Trust. 10p from every biscuit sold will go to the charity, which will use the money to help rebuild the visitor centre and observation hide at its Hauxley nature reserve.
